What is Home Manager?

Home Manager is the FREE energy management system from CPS Energy. It allows you to control your air conditioner, electric water heater and pool pump with your computer, smart phone or tablet. You can monitor your energy usage and create programs to use those devices more efficiently and save money.

What do you get with the system?

The system consists of a new meter, a programmable thermostat, and monitoring and control devices for your outside AC unit and your electric water heater. The installation and all of the components are FREE.

Is Home Manager a good fit for you?

Although Home Manager is a great way to manage energy use and save money, it’s not always the right solution for every customer. Consider these factors before you apply for the system. If it’s not a good fit, CPS Energy offers several other products and services to help you save energy and money. Click on any factor listed with a drop down arrow to see an explanation.

Home Manager is a great fit if:

  • You have internet access or a smart phone
  • You own your home
  • You are away from the house for extended periods of time
  • You have central air conditioning
  • You have an electric water heater
  • Only electric water heaters may be monitored and controlled by the Home Manager system. If you have a gas water heater, you can still use the Home Manager system, but only with your air conditioning.

Home Manager may not be a good fit if:

  • You rent or live in an apartment
  • Home Manager is currently not available to renters or apartment dwellers, since the installation involves installing control devices in the homes wiring.

  • Your home has occupants with medical conditions
  • Although infrequent, CPS Energy does raise the temperature of the thermostats on the Home Manager program by 3 degrees during peak demand times. You can opt out of these events at any time, but please consider the impact these temperature changes could have on you or anyone else in your home with a medical condition.

  • Your home is occupied the majority of the time
  • Although Home Manager will certainly function in scenarios where someone is always home, it may not provide much energy saving. The system works by using programs to adjust the thermostat when no one is at home. The savings come from using less energy during these times. So, if someone is usually home and the thermostat is set at a comfortable level, there is very little opportunity to save energy.

  • You do not have central air conditioning
  • Home Manager works by sending program information through a thermostat which controls the HVAC system. It does not work with window units.

What are conservation events?

The times CPS Energy make adjustments to the thermostats on the system are called “Conservation Events” and they occur when CPS Energy reaches peak demand, or - in common terms - when customers are using as much energy as we are generating. They also occur when there are issues with the electric grid in other parts of the state and CPS Energy is mandated to make energy available to combat blackouts. Either way, these events usually occur between 3 and 6 p.m. and only last two or three hours. Also, during that time period the adjustment to your thermostat is always 3 degrees and you can opt out at any time and return to your normal settings. All you have to do is change the temperature on your thermostat or the web portal and the system will return to that setting. Conservation events don’t occur very often, but they are crucial in managing the energy needs of the city.
